In June 1776, Thomas Jefferson withdrew to rented rooms in Philadelphia to draft what would become the Declaration of Independence. Congress had entrusted a committee of five with explaining the colonies’ case for separation from Great Britain, but the work of composing the first draft fell primarily to Jefferson. Over the course of several intense weeks, he shaped ideas about natural rights, equality, and government into words intended not only for the colonies, but for the world. 

Endowed by Their Creator imagines Jefferson in the solitude of that extraordinary task—surrounded by rejected pages, quill still in hand, pausing before words whose consequences he could not yet know.

The room bears the evidence of struggle: revisions scattered across the floor, unfinished thoughts on the desk, and the quiet exhaustion of a man trying to give language to principles larger than himself. At the center of the painting, Jefferson bows his head.

The title comes from the Declaration’s most enduring assertion: that human rights are not gifts from kings or governments, but that all people “are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights.” Those words placed the source of human liberty beyond the authority of any earthly ruler.
