I Can Ride — Sybil Ludington

Hands of Providence Collection

On the night of April 26, 1777, word reached Colonel Henry Ludington that British forces were attacking Danbury, Connecticut. To assist in the resistance, his sixteen-year-old daughter Sybil mounted her horse and rode through a violent rainstorm to summon members of her father’s militia.

I Can Ride imagines Sybil in the stillness before that dangerous journey—her hand resting against her horse, the storm breaking outside, and the weight of what she is about to attempt settling over her.

She is young. The roads are dark. The weather is severe. Somewhere beyond the barn, men must be warned before it is too late.

The title captures the simplicity of her answer to an overwhelming need: I can ride. Not because the task is safe, or easy, or certain to succeed, but because she possesses something that can be offered in that moment. The painting turns that willingness into prayer—Sybil standing beside the horse that will carry her into the darkness, reaching toward God for courage before she steps into it.

Part of the Hands of Providence collection, I Can Ride reflects the faith woven throughout the American story—the moments when men and women faced circumstances larger than themselves and reached toward God for strength, wisdom, and guidance.
