That This Nation Might Live — Abraham Lincoln

Hands of Providence Collection

In November 1863, Abraham Lincoln traveled to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, to dedicate a cemetery for Union soldiers killed in one of the Civil War’s bloodiest battles. There, he gave a brief address that reframed the terrible cost of the war around an unfinished national promise: liberty, equality, and the survival of representative government.

That This Nation Might Live imagines Lincoln in the private hours surrounding that moment—alone with casualty reports, the weight of a divided country, and the words he would offer to a grieving nation.

Rain streaks the windows as Lincoln bows his head and holds his written words against his heart. The scene is quiet, but the burden is immense. Thousands had already died, the war was far from over, and the future of the Union remained uncertain.

The title draws from Lincoln’s own words at Gettysburg, where he honored those who “gave their lives that that nation might live” and called the living to continue the unfinished work before them. He closed by invoking a nation “under God” and a “new birth of freedom.”

Part of the Hands of Providence collection, That This Nation Might Live reflects the faith woven throughout the American story—the moments when men and women faced circumstances larger than themselves and reached toward God for strength, wisdom, and guidance.
